What is Clove Oil?

It is an essential oil extracted from clove buds, which are native to Indonesia but now grown in many tropical regions. This oil contain compound “Eugenol” which is very powerful and effective, which makes up about 75-90% of its composition. This compound is responsible for most of clove oil’s therapeutic properties, including its distinctive warming sensation, analgesic effects, and antimicrobial action. There are two types of clove oil you should know about:

Pure Essential Oil:

This is highly concentrated and extremely potent. It requires professional equipment to make clove oil. It is a pure oil that is extracted from the whole clove.

Infused Clove Oil:

Made by infusing cloves in carrier oil, this is gentler and perfect for home preparation. While it contains less concentration than pure essential oils.

How to Make Clove Oil at Home Method

Cold Infusion (Traditional Method)

This method preserves the delicate compounds in cloves and is ideal for beginners.

 Ingredients:

1-2 tablespoons whole cloves (preferably organic)

½ to 1 cup carrier oil which suits your skin (extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, or sweet almond oil)

Clean, dry glass jar with tight-fitting lid

fine mesh strainer or use soft piece of cloth and for storage use Dark glass bottle.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Prepare the Cloves: Lightly crush the whole cloves using a mortar and pestle. You don’t need to grind them into powder—just break them. Crushing increases the surface area and helps the oil infuse more effectively.

Combine Ingredients: Place the crushed cloves in a clean, completely dry glass jar. Any moisture can cause the oil to spoil, so ensure everything is thoroughly dry.

Add Carrier Oil: Pour your chosen carrier oil over the cloves until they’re completely soaked.

Seal and Store: Close the jar tightly and place it in a cool, dark location like a kitchen cupboard. Avoid direct sunlight, which can degrade the oil’s beneficial compounds.

Infusion Period: Let the mixture sit for 2-3 weeks for optimal potency. Shake the jar gently once daily to distribute the clove compounds throughout the oil.

Strain Process: After the infusion period, strain the oil through fine cloth or use a fine mesh strainer into a clean bowl. Squeeze the cloth to extract every drop of precious oil.

My Personal favorite Clove Serum

I actually made this at home and honestly the results were better than I expected. I added crushed cloves into jojoba oil and also put 2 small pieces of licorice root in it — because licorice root gives an amazing glow to the skin. Then I kept the jar in sunlight for 2 to 3 hours every day for 3 days. After that I kept it combined and stored it. The color turned golden which was so satisfying to see!
I chose jojoba oil specifically because it is very lightweight. My skin is a little oily and I noticed that once I started using it, it actually started balancing my skin’s oil production. Now my skin is neither too dry nor too oily — which is exactly what oily skin needs.
My application method: every alternate day at night, I massage it lightly on my face and leave it overnight. The results I noticed after consistent use — skin felt tighter, acne was more controlled, and there was a visible glow.
If you have oily skin like me, I highly recommend jojoba oil as your carrier oil. And the licorice root addition is my personal secret — try it once and you will see the difference yourself!
